In a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (Mahakittikun et al., 2006;118:1164-8), 32 different “mite-proof” fabrics from 9 countries were tested using the Siriraj chamber method.
The study showed that not every fabric sold as mite-proof provides the same level of protection, and that tightly woven fabrics were effective at blocking mite penetration. MicroAir Pristine® covers are made of tightly woven fabric.
Similarly, a study by Miller et al. (J Allergy Clin Immunol, 2007) reported that mite and cat allergen can accumulate over time in non-woven mattress encasings, while accumulation was lower in woven encasings.
When choosing a cover, pay attention to the weave and pore size of the fabric, and apply the other avoidance measures recommended by your physician as well.
